Uses interesting lighting techniques.  The underwater scenes almost take on a graphic feeling.  Example photo of the turtle was taken with: Sea & Sea housing, 2 x Ikelite DS-125 strobes.

Whether you travel several times a year or live on the road, as a professional photographer you know the demands of taking photos when you travel. There is definitely more to consider when you are on the move than just your camera.

But the camera and the equipment demands on landscape photographers on the move can add up to serious weight in gear when you include accessories and storage. A lightweight camera like the Samsung GX-20 which is very similar to the Pentax K20D, is a welcome alternative for landscape photography without compromise.  This camera is perfect for travel because of two of the features that are sure to please and excellent performance to produce outstanding landscape photographs; the sensor-shift optical image stabilization that’s built into the body and functional with all lenses and a combination wheel-and-thumb-pad navigator that takes the work out of changing modes and makes metering easy without moving your eye from the viewfinder.

In terms of the cool factor, the GX-20 features the same 14.6-megapixel Samsung CMOS sensor and the same feature set as the Pentax the K20D. The only exception in this case is the 14-bit RAW images which are Adobe DNG that can be converted to JPEG right in the camera..
Samsung markets several Samsung and Schneider lenses designed specifically for Samsung D-SLRs. But photographers will also have the advantage of being able to use almost any Pentax K-mount lenses.

Add to these features the dustproof and weather resistant construction, 2.7-inch live-view monitor and a sensor-dust remover and the result is a camera built to handle the rigors of travel.

Some of the more unique features that this lightweight camera provides are:

  • The “scene modes” feature will quickly set the camera for the best shot optimally for shooting popular subjects like people, landscapes, close-ups, action and night scenes
  • Live-view LCD monitors make composing in dim light or at odd angles easier.
  • Extended dynamic-range features provide better detail in high-contrast scenes
  • Weather resistance lets you shoot in fog and drizzle

And if you really want to reduce your travel weight even more, a wide-range zoom like an 18-200mm covers most travel-shooting situations.

In general you should look for a travel D-SLRs with the following features:

  • Compact size: This is a no-brainer—the lightweight makes it easy to handle and reduces storage space.
  • Built-in flash:  This feature ensures that you always have enough light to photograph nearby subjects.. Built-in flash can also be used as fill on a bright day with high contrast shadows.
  • Maximum ISO of 3200 or higher: A high ISO gives you some maneuvering room to take the shot in low light while maintain a decent shutter speed.
  • Auto-bracketing: For those spontaneous photo opportunities, auto-bracketing makes it easy to get a good exposure of such scenes by automatically shoots several exposures in rapid succession.

You can travel light and still produce great landscape photography with the right gear. Just remember to take plenty of memory cards and spare batteries for your camera(s).
